If the GRE is "Optional," Should You Take it Anyway?
In this unusual application cycle due to ongoing pandemic concerns, a number of graduate and business schools have made the GRE "optional" (or waived the requirement entirely). If you're applying to one of those programs, should you take the GRE anyway? For whom is it a good idea to still apply with a GRE score as a way to boost your candidate profile and demonstrate readiness for the grad school classroom?
To help answer this important question, we've invited Barbara Coward, founder of MBA 360 Admissions Consulting, to share three considerations that will help you make the decision that's best for you. As someone who has read applications for a top business school, Barbara knows what sets applicants apart -- and whether a good GRE score might be what ends up getting you over the hump.
If you decide to take the "optional" GRE -- or if you're applying to a program that is still requiring it -- let us help you get the score you need. If you're going to bother taking it you might as well dominate it, right?! Learn the Secret Ingredient for Dominating the GRE
I never comment, but I need to thank you! This was extremely helpful! My problem is not vocabulary and not even understanding, it's actually getting lost in the details of a reading passage. Tomorrow, as I'm practicing, I'll use some of your tips and see how it goes!
That's great to hear! Thank you for taking the time to comment. So... how did it go when you practiced applying these tips?
Just asking out of curiosity, if we were asked to find the minumum A’ that will be 21, right? Since, in the third scenario when we subtract the AnB from A, we get 21. Am I right? Furthermore, if asked to find A’nB or vice verse, how do I solve for it?
So if the question said minimum instead of maximum. Will it be 0 or 27 and why?
27. That's what I explain at ~4:30. There must be some overlap (i.e. "both") because 142 + 121 is more than the total number of students (236). So it has to be the case that some of the students are in both classes. At a minimum, there must be 142 + 121 - 236 = 27. There could be more, as I explain in the rest of the video, but at a minimum there must be at least 27.
My question is how will business schools or grad programs evaluate the test score? Most schools have not updated their averages. So let's say student A took the Shorter GRE and scored a 163 quant. Student B took the long version of the GRE and scored a 163 quant. Will business schools evaluate the scores evenly? How will that impact the score weight the schools are using?
Yes, schools will evaluate those scores evenly. Since the core content tested and the question types themselves are exactly the same, there hasn't been any significant difference in the distribution of scores that students are reporting. It's close enough to apples-to-apples that admissions officers are treating the new GRE the same as the old GRE when looking at scores.
@DominatetheGRE Thanks. How often do schools review percentiles? I had friends who told me that when they received their score, the percentile said one thing. However, they realized that their percentile had changed.
@@Mikebuddy2229 I'm sure they're aware of the changes whenever the ETS puts out new percentile rankings, which isn't every year. Schools have a general sense of what score range falls within the percentile ranking they're looking for, and so they focus more on the scores themselves than the nuanced percentiles. It'll probably be a year or two before they have really good data on the new Shorter GRE. Once they release the newest percentile rankings, the admissions officers will definitely be aware.
Is there going to be reading comprehension on the new shorter GRE?
Yes. Nothing substantial has changed with the way reading comprehension is tested on the GRE.
Great
Thank you. Glad it helped!
Age limit for PhD admission in USA???
I don't believe that's a specific age limit. That's really up to each respective school/department based on what they're looking for in a candidate. I once had a student use the GRE to apply for a PhD in genetics... and he was in his 60's!
is there any formula that we can use to find min max for 3 set questions?
Hi- thank you for sharing. You are awesome. I am preparing for the GRE. I am 45, from the RMI.
Thank you! And congrats on deciding to go back to school. What type of graduate program are you applying for?
Thank you so much sir 🤍
My pleasure!
Thank you! The first time I was studying for GRE I realized that I assumed the variable is always an integer therefore got these questions wrong...Now it makes much more sense :)

I'm 29 working as a floor supervisor at a logistics & supply chain company, about to start my MBA online at the University of Utah; I've earned my Bachelor & Associate degrees in science in Economics, and now I figured was the best time to start my graduate program before I turn 30 in May of 2024. With almost 10 years of professional experience in logistics and supply chain, this felt like the most logical next step forward in my career advancement. Thank you for the video and information!
Sounds like a great next move for you. Good luck as you tackle the GRE (or have you already taken it if you've been admitted to U of U?) and let me know how else we can help!
@DominatetheGRE I'm probably going to take the GMAT instead since the MBA admission office only mentioned one or the other, and I have the official study guides for the GMAT so it should be similar to the material I've been seeing for the GRE content. Thank you! 🙏
@@DominatetheGRE I'm trying to start my MBA in Spring 2024, but if I have to wait until May then so be it.
@@DominatetheGRE it's funny because I've never taken the GRE or even heard of it, or the GMAT, until the MBA admission office told me about it.
@@Tactical_DZ Sounds like a plan. Just be careful because while some of the GMAT and GRE content overlaps, there are key differences as well. Absolutely. That's definitely an advantage for a lot of students with the shorter exam format.
Thanks for your shorts on the New shorter GRE. They are very helpful. Could you please do some short videos on the new TOEFL iBT test as well, that started from 26th July 2023? Any information on the new format and changes introduced will be very helpful. Thanks.

exams are poor means of testing actual educational and research ability, a 3 hour exam doesn't say anything about actual aptitude and performance on a program, it just tests for stock knowledge.
Is that assessment based on taking the GRE yourself?
@@DominatetheGREyou don't agree? Aptitude tests are who can remember more vocab. The math parts of the tests are all easy. Often times it comes down to the amount of vocab you know
@@CybersStorm We can debate the effectiveness of standardized tests, like the GRE, for gauging success in the classroom all we want. But whether I, you, or anyone else thinks they're valid or not is irrelevant; graduate school admissions departments have decided they're useful, and thus require them as part of their application requirements. Theirs is really the only opinion that matters. Complaining about standardized tests is akin to complaining about having to pay taxes. You might not agree with it, but it doesn't change the necessity of playing the game, so to speak. Or, you can choose not to go to graduate school (or pick a school that doesn't require the GRE). You certainly have that right. For the hundreds of thousands of students who do choose to go to graduate school and have to take the GRE each year, however, my job is to prepare them to do well on it. That's where I'm coming from.
Thanks. Could you please clarify the order in which the quant and verbal sections are to appear in the new shorter GRE? Is it going to be alternately verbal & quant, verbal & quant? Or, 2 Verbal sections tog. and 2 Quant sections tog.?
There's no set order, just like on the current GRE. The essay will still come first. After that, it could be any combination of 2 Quant sections + 2 Verbal sections. It's highly unlikely that you'll have two of the same type of section back-to-back, but it's possible. But whether Quant or Verbal comes first, that's still going to be random from what I've been told by people at ETS.
Thanks for the updates on the new shorter GRE. Eagerly waiting for more updates in this series.
My pleasure. Glad you're enjoying them!

@@DominatetheGRE Very impressive. I live in London and work as a debt capital markets lawyer. I have been a senior associate at White & Case and more recently at Clifford Chance. I often work with US headquartered law firms so was intrigued. I will embark on your GRE course soon which seems very good.

@@DominatetheGRE At this stage I am simply looking into business schools and the GRE is part of the entry requirement. The DCM legal practice area is highly concentrated in just a few law firms in London and there are very limited opportunities to join at partner level. In view of this I may try to stay within the DCM industry but in a more business focussed role perhaps in ibanking or a credit rating agency. In theory a one year MBA or a MFin may be a route into this type of role within the DCM space. Ideally it would have been nice to secure partnership at a City law firm but recently I have contacting in-house in the legal departments of banks like BNP Paribas, HSBC and SMBC Nikko. To be honest my interest is mainly driven by very limited senior level opportunities for a DCM lawyer in the London and EMEA region. I have already earned a fair bit at it though.
@@danielmoore9214 That's a good realization that your upside potential appears to be capped with what you're currently doing. It sounds like an MBA may open some more doors for you, so that's great!
Very helpful !
Glad to hear it!
I haven't studied maths since I was 16, will your course teach me the basic principles of this algebra ? I am otherwise academically capable as an experienced securities lawyer.
Yes. There is a comprehensive GRE Math Review section that will teach you all of the foundational concepts for algebra, arithmetic, geometry, and data analysis. Most of our students haven't done math since high school and end up doing really well on the GRE, so you're not alone!
I got the right answer by eyeballing but found the traditional maths based strategies difficult to follow.
Eyeballing seemed a more pragmatic strategy than I would have thought to get the answer.
It definitely is. Remember that eyeballing doesn't work on all GRE geometry questions, but for the ones it does, it's a big time-saver!
Very helpful....
I'm glad to hear it!
Got it now. The book is the Official Guide To The GRE.
Yep, you got it!

My pleasure. Glad you resonated with it!
What if after the simplification for w we got 3/5 instead of 9/5 How do we go with the answer
I have a question. I'm going to take maths test GRE. Will there be any conversation before test? About why i need this certificate
No, nobody from ETS will be asking you why you're taking the GRE. You will be able to use your GRE score for whatever purpose you need. It's important that you're clear on why you want/need the degree you're pursuing, however. That's often a question you will need to answer in your admissions essays and potential entrance interviews. But in terms of the GRE itself, you don't need to explain your reasons to anyone.
I am the permanent resident of the USA. Should I take GRE? I am 47 years old and want to do PhD IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
Your country of residence doesn't matter. Both the GMAT and GRE are offered all over the world. For a PhD in the sciences, the GMAT wouldn't be relevant; it's more of an exam for business school. So if a standardized test is required for the program(s) you're applying to, I'm sure it will be the GRE. But double-check the admissions requirements before starting to study. It's possible they'll waive the requirement depending on your academic background and work experience. If you do end up moving forward with the GRE, I hope you'll consider our comprehensive prep course. Either way, we're here to help!
Thank you~
My pleasure. Which exam do you think you're going to go with? Good luck and let me know how else I can help.
Hi there my base knowledge is ZERO, will your course help with the basics as well as tackling the exam ?
Yes. My course provides a thorough review of all of the foundational math and verbal concepts, and then layers test-taking strategies on top. A lot of my students are starting from complete scratch, so you're not alone! But the course also gets sufficiently advanced to help students who want to get the highest possible scores. I think it will be exactly what you need.
Very helpful 👏

I am most concerned about the quantitative section. Not good at math.
Thanks for sharing, Rene. Remember that you don't have to become an algebra major to do well on GRE math. Brush up on the different math concepts tested on the exam, obviously, but always with an eye toward how they appear in actual GRE questions. Then, as discussed in this "GRE Mastery Series," be sure to learn our different non-standard math strategies so that you can get right answers even if you don't immediately know how to do the relevant math. I've tried asking why I wasn't accepted and their response was "we do not provide feedback on your materials, interview, or application. Try again next year".
That's surprising. Did you try calling the admissions office? That sounds like a stock e-mail response on their end. Sometimes they're more communicative via phone.
Now, this is the question I needed to see!
Awesome. Glad you found it at just the right time!
I’m applying for professional counseling and only the school I’m applying to takes both and I can’t decide which one should I take. Which one is easier?
Perception of "easier" varies from student to student, so I can't answer that definitively for you. That said, in my experience, many of my students who have taken both exams said the GRE was a bit easier for them. I would recommend working a handful of practice questions for each exam to see what you think yourself. In particular, do several Data Sufficiency (GMAT) and Quantitative Comparison (GRE) questions to see which "weird" quantitative question type suits you better. Likewise on the verbal side, see whether you feel more comfortable with the more grammar-based Sentence Correction questions (GMAT) or vocabulary-heavy Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence Questions (GRE). If you have the time, you could even take a full-length practice test of each and see how it goes. Good luck and let us know how else we can help!
Still the best video until 2022
